Ebru or Turkish Marbling is a classical marbling technique. A shallow tray is filled with water, and various kinds of ink or paint colors are carefully applied to the surface with an ink brush. Various additives are used to help float the colors, which can then be manipulated to create an endless array of designs. Beautiful patterns and various other effects are created by drawing through a second application of paint that is placed directly on top of the first. This is done using combs, rakes and hand held styluses which produce one-of-a-kind floating pictures.
Silk is gently laid onto the floating colors. The colors are thereby transferred and adhered to the surface of the material. The material is then carefully lifted off the size, and hung up to dry.
